Fugitive couple arrested in Portland
A fugitive Mississippi couple thats been on the run for five years has been arrested in Oregon.
US Marshal Gale Manning said Janet and Ramon Barreto were arrested Tuesday in Portland.
According to court documents, the couple were living under different names at a Vancouver apartment complex. Those who lived there said they were shocked to learn the truth about the pair.
The couple is charged with manslaughter in the death of their adopted 2-year-old daughter in 2008.
Authorities said the Barretos left Mississippi shortly after the childs death and left their oldest daughter behind to face police alone.
Investigators said they believe the older daughter is the one who actually killed the toddler but added it was her parents who forced her to do so.
Court documents revealed that the daughter said her mother forced her to discipline her little sister, and when she threw her into a plywood bed at one point, the 2-year-old died.
Janet and Ramon Barreto are also accused of abusing eight other children and running a puppy mill.
The Barretos were free on $450,000 bond when they disappeared in 2009. The U.S. Marshals Service said it tracked them to Mexico but lost their trail. The pair was later seen in various locations in southern California with a tip from someone in Mississippi leading authorities to Portland.
