Pedestrian hit by car, killed in SE Portland

UPDATE: Victim, driver identified

A pedestrian was killed when a car on Southeast Division Street swerved up onto the sidewalk and hit him Monday afternoon.

The woman driving the car was injured when it then veered back across Division and struck a power poll.

The victim is identified as James Dalton Porter, 55.

The driver is identified as Estelle Irene Fuman, 84. She was transported to a Portland hospital for treatment.

According to police, preliminary information indicates that Fuman may have suffered a medical event prior to the crash, which led to the erratic driving. She was not impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Investigators believe Fuman was driving westbound on Division, veered across the eastbound lanes, and drove up onto the south sidewalk, where she struck and killed Porter, who was walking on it.

Fuman then veered back across Division and struck a telephone pole on the north sidewalk, police say.

According to police, at 3:04 p.m. on Aug. 18, East Precinct officers responded to the report of a crash and a person down on Division at 66th Avenue. Officers and medical personnel arrived and located a male adult down on the ground suffering from traumatic injuries. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and the man died at the scene.

The driver was transported to a Portland hospital with traumatic injuries but is expected to survive.

The Traffic Division's Major Crash Team responded to conduct the investigation. Division was closed to traffic from 64th to 69th avenues.
