I-84 shut down after police shoot at suspect

Photo Credit: COURTESY KOIN 6 NEW - ODOT camera shows a portion of I-84 shut down before of shooting.Portland police shut down a portion of I-84 around Northeast 122nd Avenue after officers fired at a fleeing armed suspect in the 11200 block of Northeast Fremont Street on Monday morning.

There were no immediate reports of anyone being hurt.

The Special Emergency Reaction Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist North Precinct officers in the active, ongoing tactical incident.

The suspect in the incident is contained and officers are attempting to communicate with him around 10:40 a.m.

Residents along that section of Fremont were asked to shelter-in-place unless directed otherwise by police at the scene.

A law enforcement source told KOIN 6 News that just before 10 a.m., emergency dispatchers received multiple reports of a man armed with a gun in the area of Northeast 122nd Avenue and I-84. Responding officers saw the man, who was seen running on I-84, and the railroad tracks adjacent to it. The suspect may have tried to carjack a vehicle, the law enforcement source said, but the driver was able to get out of the way.

The suspect kept running onto Northeast Fremont, then toward Northeast 112th. He pointed his weapon at the officers, who fired at him, the law enforcement source said.

Officers from Gresham and the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
