Unproven sex charges were pending against longime Portland jazz scene fixture at the time of his death

JOHN ROSMAN/OPBJOHN ROSMAN/OPB - Celebrated Portland jazz musician and educator Thara Memory died Saturday, June 17, at age 68. Oregon Public Broadcasting is reporting that famed Portland jazz musician and teacher Thara Memory died Saturday at age 68.

Memory played with distinction on bandstands in Portland and elsewhere and mentored students as auspicious as Esperanza Spaulding. Memory's health was failing for several years. He suffered from diabetes and kidney problems.

In the months before his death, Memory was charged with sex offenses that were not yet proven.
