Local man who grew up near Boring shoots promotion for luxury carmaker in places he knows well

You might have missed it, but Aug. 9 was Dull and Boring Day. It's been a real thing since 2013, celebrating the twin towns of Dull in Scotland, and our own Boring, Oregon.

It also was the day Jaguar debuted a new video for their F-Type sports car, featuring residents from both cities.

"The Jaguar F-Type is our performance sports car, so we wanted to demonstrate how the vehicle can excite the senses and enhance everyday driving experiences," said Joe Torpey, communications manager for Jaguar Land Rover North America. "Bringing the F-Type to the cities of Dull and Boring allowed us to have a bit of fun with the brand in a way that was relatable for Jaguar consumers in the United Kingdom and the United States."

Jaguar selected two residents of Boring, and another pair from Dull, to experience a new 2018 Jaguar F-Type R for themselves in their hometowns. Marty Beaudet and Adam Davis were the lucky duo from Boring.

"Driving the Jag was an incredible experience," Davis said. "To be in charge of and directly responsible for so much raw power is harrowing, to be sure."

The 2018 Jaguar F-Type R delivers 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque from a supercharged 5.0-liter, V8 engine. Equipped with all-wheel-drive, the F-Type R will accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 3.9 seconds.

"Keeping the creature at the speed limit was its own unenviable task," Davis said, "especially when it came time to traverse Boring and Sandy intersections at 25 mph. The thing goes 50 on accident!"

Davis and Beaudet got to drive the Jag around the area for several days while the film crew did their work. Several other Boring residents made cameo appearances in the final product.

"The U.K. production team flew stateside to shoot the video but hired the rest of their crew locally," Davis said. "All told, they were a great group of people to work with, and our Portland crew did an excellent job — I felt the Portland pride for sure."

Another pair from Dull enjoyed a similar experience. The video is available for viewing on YouTube.

Of course, the big question is whether the subjects got to keep the cars.

"They did not let me keep the car," Davis said. "I mourn the loss, but if you love something, set it free."

By coincidence, the video was shot by someone who grew up close to Boring — Portland videographer Andrew Schaffer. Jaguar located him by referral from another studio, not knowing they also found a perfect guide for their Oregon expedition.

"They were looking for someone in Portland, (but) they didn't know I was from the area, so it solidified their decision," Schaffer said. "It was really cool. I spent 15 years out there through my childhood. To be able to go back — I was immediately comfortable."

Schaffer graduated from Sandy High School in 2007, going on to gain a degree in video production from Mt. Hood Community College in 2015. Shortly after college, Schaffer's career as a producer took off, with an internship in Oregon City, and then the opening of Firwood, his own home-based studio in Portland.

With the start of Firwood Studios, named for the area near Sandy where Schaffer grew up, he hoped to fill a niche: supplying companies with affordable, high-quality advertisements.

"I get to make a creative product that also helps local businesses," he said.

The video comprises scenes from two days of filming in Dull, Scotland, and two days in Boring, Oregon, an idea dreamed up by someone from Jaguar's office in the United Kingdom after learning of the villages' pairing as sister communities.

"The vision was to take the towns of Dull and Boring and spice them up a bit with our Jaguar F-Type," said Brady Fain, social media lead for Jaguar Land Rover, North America, LLC. "We wanted to have a couple of shots where people were doing a lot of 'boring' tasks or more everyday (things) and they stop to look at the car.

"It was great. The people were super-friendly and willing to help any way they could. We can't say enough about the town and enough of the people."

"We got some great characters," Schaffer added.

For two days, the crew raced its shiny new 2018 F-Type around Boring, and even through some parts of Sandy and Damascus, stopping by local institutions like Liepold Farms Berry Stand, Wescott's Auto Restyling and even outside Schaffer's old Sandy home.

Jaguar is one of the largest clients Schaffer has ever worked with, and the company's choice of location allowed Schaffer to revisit old stomping grounds.

Schaffer's roots also helped comfort the people he consulted out in the Sandy area, as they appreciated that he was from there.

"It helped a lot, I think, when I told people I was from there," he added. "It was definitely very nostalgic and it was nice to find places I knew about and had been, and know it would be represented in a good light."

With the filming and editing done, Schaffer looks forward to a few new local projects, including a trip to a trampoline park, and is happy to have had the experience with Jaguar.

"Every project has its challenges," he said. "For a client as big as Jaguar, there's not a lot of wiggle room. It all came together — it always does."
