Sheriff: Mother left children in park to get tattoo
A Hillsboro mother was arrested Saturday afternoon for leaving her two children in a Cornelius park while she went to get a tattoo.
Ana Lisa Lara, 28, was lodged in the Washington County Jail on $10,000 bail. She is charged with two counts of criminal mistreatment in the first degree, recklessly endangering another person, and child neglect in the second degree. The children were placed in the care of a family member.
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, at 5:36 p.m. on Sept. 9, deputies serving the City of Cornelius responded to a 911 call at Harleman Park. Deputies were told a family found two children unattended in a public bathroom in the park.
When the deputies arrived, they found two children, ages 3 and 8, unsupervised. The children were reportedly dropped off at the park by their mother while she went to a local tattoo parlor.
The WCSO says the children were frightened when it began to rain and hid in the park bathroom. They were discovered by a family using the bathroom, who called deputies to help the children.
The mother, later identified as Lara, was arrested when she returned to the park at 6 p.m. to pick her children up. Deputies believe she left her children unattended for at least an hour so she could obtain a new tattoo.
