Robbery suspect dies during attempted holdup
A 53-year-old Newberg man died Wednesday evening during what Portland police said was an attempted armed robbery at the U-Haul store on Southeast Powell Boulevard.
Police said a man, identified Thursday as Robert R. Porter, apparently went to the store with a firearm and demanded money, died as a result of gunfire.
Police said U-Haul employee Tyson B. Pfau, 27, shot Porter during the attempted robbery. Robber and homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.
The robbery happened at about 6:59 p.m. Jan. 3, at the U-Haul shop, 4831 S.E. Powell Blvd. When officers arrived, they found a wounded man on the property. He was taken to a local hospital, but died in the ambulance on the way.
According to police, the man entered the U-Haul with a firearm and demanded money. While the suspect was on U-Haul property he sustained injuries believed to be the result of gunfire.
