Alina and Catalin Stoica operate an adult-care home on Bull Mountain

by: BARBARA SHERMAN - ALL THE COMFORTS OF HOME - Nancy Raske (left), owner of NW Senior Resources Inc., vists with Alina Stoica, owner of Golden Years Adult Care Home on Bull Mountain, who has room for four senior residents.Alina Stoica and her husband Catalin operate Golden Years Adult Care Home on Bull Mountain in a home that they had built specifically for an adult-care home.

They moved to the United States in 1998 after applying for visas, and Alina noted, "We are living the American dream."

As for their adult-care home built for four seniors, "I would want to bring my mom and dad here," Alina said.

"The families come all the time to visit," Alina said. "The door is open all the time. In Romania, we welcome visitors with bread and salt, but here, they stay and eat. I cook everything from scratch, even bread, and the residents help roll the dough."

Alina loves to cook "almost" organic, creative and nutritious meals. She is a registered nurse by training with more than 10 years experience in cardiology, internal medicine and gastroenterology in Romania, and Catalin, who is the back-up care manager, is a paralegal in a medical office.

"Our thorough medical knowledge helps us provide the utmost care to the residents," Alina said.

That is especially relevant since two of Alina's residents are 93, and the others are 95 and 99 years old.

Alina holds the record for keeping the longest-lived person in hospice in the state of Oregon - Sally was in hospice for four years, and another of her "ladies" came in as a hospice resident and "rebounded" out.

"Our residents are part of our family, and our son, who is 12 years old, is very involved in our daily activities with the residents," she said. "We have no family in the States, so he likes the interaction with the 'grandmas.’"

The couple has been operating the home for 5 ½ years, and Alina said, "we promise the families that we will provide quality care. I tell the families I try to keep the residents happy, but I won't replace their daughters."
