King City TVF&R captain provides startling statistics
Every year fireworks cause up to $90,000 in property damage districtwide
In past years districtwide, Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue has typically responded to 40 to 50 firework fires, resulting in $66,000 to $90,000 worth of property damage. Fireworks are one of the top 10 causes of fires in our fire district.
This is concerning in that the bulk of these incidents take place in a two- to three-week period around the holiday. Another concern of firefighters is that the number of individuals using illegal fireworks appears to be growing each year.
Many fireworks purchased by mail order or in the state of Washington are illegal in Oregon. This includes bottle rockets, roman candles, firecrackers and M80s. The King City firefighters would like to remind individuals to "Keep it legal keep it safe."
If someone is found using illegal fireworks, law enforcement may be summoned.
