Youngster sticks up coffee stand on Holgate

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO - Police are looking for this armed suspect, shown in a surveillance video, who robbed the Mocha Express coffee stand on Holgate Boulevard at 51st.With a hood pulled up around her face, and wearing large sunglasses, a girl brandished a semiautomatic pistol and held up the barista working her morning shift at Mocha Express, at 5111 S.E. Holgate Boulevard, at 9:05 am on September 8.

“She said she was taken by surprise,” a co-worker later told THE BEE. “I’d expect it to be a raggedy-looking transient, but she said it looked like a young teenage girl.”

“Officers arrived in the area and spoke to the victim,” said Portland Police Bureau Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson. “After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect fled into the neighborhood.”

Even after an extensive neighborhood search – including with a Police K-9 unit – officers didn’t find a trace of the youthful suspect.

A week later, after getting his beverage there, Brad Hildebrandt remarked to THE BEE that he was surprised anyone would hold up a coffee stand. “They wouldn’t get much money, especially in the morning. It’s too bad; the girls who work here are alone, and they’re working to earn a living.”

“We are still looking for a young-looking female, possibly 13 to 15 years old, five-foot-even in height, thin build, wearing dark clothing,” Simpson said. “Anyone with information about this robbery is asked to contact Robbery Detectives at 503/823-0405.”
