Soccer day at Duniway scores big

by: DAVID F. ASHTON - Here come Crush teammates Molly Mitchoff and Brady Ryan, running the ball during the Southeast Soccer Club Mighty Mites Jamboree in Eastmoreland. For the fourth year, the Southeast Soccer Club held their “Mighty Mites Jamboree” at Duniway Elementary School’s sports field on September 7th.

“We serve 1,100 kids and their families, who primarily live in Inner Southeast Portland,” said the club’s President Jeffrey West.

“At the ‘Mighty Mites Jamboree’, about 300 kids start their fall soccer season,” West told THE BEE. “At this event, our younger players get to meet their coaches for the first time, get their uniforms, and play in a 20-minute game.”

To give these young athletes – who are between six and seven years of age – time on the field, the games are played with three members from a team on each side.

The bright orange jerseys made the team called “Crush” easy to spot, said parent and coach Heidi Eichentopf. “Our team’s players come from Dunaway, Holy Family, Grout, and Whitman.”

Up and down the field the kids ran, chasing and kicking the soccer ball. “I think we’re going to have a good season,” Eichentopf commented.

Although their teams’ sign-ups are now closed for the season, you can learn more about this local soccer league online at: www.sesc-pdx.org.
