New bioswales at Lewis Elementary

by: DR. GENIE WILLIS - Depave plantingThe October issue of THE BEE chronicled the “depaving” of part of the parking area at Lewis Elementary School in Woodstock. The asphalt removal was done to provide two planting areas for bioswales at the school; the planting was designed by Rachel Hull. So, on a morning in mid-October, volunteers from the school staff, along with students’ parents and members of the community, turned out to do the planting (shown). Wielding the hoe at far right is Kathleen Witter, who teaches gardening to Lewis students. The project was made possible in part by the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District.
