Kiddies' Barn Dance in Woodstock gym

by: DAVID F. ASHTON - Its family square dance time in Woodstock, at the Southside Swap & Play fundraising Barn Dance. A bona fide hoedown was underway in the Our Lady of Sorrows gymnasium on May 10 when THE BEE arrived. It was hosted by “Southside Swap & Play”, which is based in the former Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School building, at Woodstock Boulevard at S.E. 52nd Avenue.

“We have live music, square dancing, and some ‘bunny rabbit animal friends’ all here this afternoon,” smiled the nonprofit family organization’s director, Ellen Zientek.

“We also have face painting, crafts, and food – and beer and wine for the parents,” Zientek added. “We have fun for pretty much everybody.”

Being a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, fundraising is important to Southside Swap & Play, she said. “So, we created a family-friendly event; something that our community could come and participate in, and which would also be open to the public.”

Inside the venue, “Caroline Oakley and the OldTime Highway” played square dance tunes, and taught basic line dances while they performed.

Some thirty volunteers worked to put on the event that ended in time for most youngsters’ bedtime. “We were hoping to raise about $1,500,” said Zientek. “All of that will go straight to community-building efforts, here in the neighborhood.”
