Some say they're the best bagels in Portland currently -- maybe that's why they have 3 locations

RITA A. LEONARD - Opening a new Sellwood location, Leah Orndoff displays some of the many boiled bagels made daily at Henry Higgins bakery. "Henry Higgins Bagels" is coming to Sellwood this month. The local bagel baker will set up shop at 1325 S.E. Tacoma Street, next to the UPS Store, in the former home of Feastworks Delicatessen. According to owner Leah Orndoff, the site is flanked by two parking lots, and will be similar to the shop's two other Portland locations.

The store distinguishes itself from other bagel bakeries by the fact that their bagels are boiled in the traditional way; bagel lovers have made the first Southeast location, on Foster Road, a growing success. The Sellwood shop will be a café-style restaurant with 25 seats, and will serve fresh breakfast and lunch bagel sandwiches with coffees, teas, and hot chocolate. Over a dozen different bagel flavors are available, accompanied by a variety of spreads, meats, cheeses, and add-ons. Orndoff said, "We always source locally first, and use care and traditional artisan methods in everything we do."

Departing Feastworks owner Ashley Bisagna told THE BEE, "Henry Higgins is an awesome local bagel company that sells their boiled bagels along with house-made schmears and bagel sandwiches. They will be a great addition to Sellwood."

Orndoff commented in our February interview, "We're still hammering out the final design details, but we hope to make space for the little ones to play here.

"We'll be open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a staff of about eight to serve you. All our baking is done at our bakery on N.E. 19th and Glisan, under head baker Dave Barile."
