Portland Ballet to offer free introductory classes

Southwest Portland-based Portland Ballet will hold a series of free pre-ballet courses for students ages 6-9 years old. Each series consists of four classes, which are held once a week in succession at the Ballet's studios, 6250 S.W. Capitol Highway. You can register online at theportlandballet.org or by calling 503-452-8448.

Students must follow a dress code. Female dances should wear pink tights, pink ballet shoes and a leotard of any color; male dancers should wear black tights, a white t-shirt and black ballet shoes.

Upcoming classes include:

- 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Mondays, July 10, 17, 24 and 31

- 10-11 a.m. on Saturdays, July 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5

- 11:15 a.m-12:15 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 9, 16, 23 and 30

- 11:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2018

National Night Out events planned

Both the Hillsdale Neighborhood Association and Community Partners for Affordable housing will hold National Night Out events in August.

The Neighborhood Association will kick off the Night Out festivities on Tuesday, Aug. 1. From 6-8 p.m. at DeWitt Park (across from the Hillsdale Library), attendees can enjoy kids' activities and live music. The association encourages visitors to bring potluck food and beverages to share. Plates and cups will be provided.

The CPAH event will be held at the nonprofit's Watershed Building (6388 S.W. Capitol Highway) from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4. The event will feature live music by the Minidoka Swing Band, refreshments and talks from local public safety officials. Parking will be available under the bridge off Southwest Bertha Boulevard.

Book donation wanted in advance of community sale

The Hillsdale Community Foundation will host a fundraising sale at the Watershed Building (6388 S.W. Capitol Highway) from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, July 30, to raise money for grant funding of community and school projects.

In preparation for the book sale, the Foundation is asking people to donate books during the Hillsdale Farmers Market on July 16 and July 23. You can also drop off donations at the Watershed Buidling from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from July 18-27. The Foundation also accepts DVDs.
