Senior Kenny Klippel won all three throwing events, including a new PR in both the shot put and the discus.

by: JOHN WILLIAM HOWARD - Tribe senior Alix Raya splashes down in the sand after competing in the long jump. Raya finished fifth in the competition on Wednesday, April 2.If his never-say-die attitude counts for anything, the Indians can expect some big things from Kenny Klippel this season. He'd just thrown 44 feet, 1.5 inches in the shot-put, topping his mark from the March 20 opening meet by nearly four inches for a new personal record.

by: JOHN WILLIAM HOWARD - Scappoose senior Kenny Klippel set a new personal record in the shot put on Wednesday, throwing 44 feet, 1.5 inches.“It's a PR, but I could have done better,” he said, nonchalantly.

He then went and threw 143 feet dead, a new PR in the discus, before winning the javelin competition by a measly 36 feet, nine inches at Scappoose's meet on April 2 against Seaside and Tillamook. He's far from his 2013 personal record of 169 feet, two inches, but the early season form in all three events bodes well for the senior, who will attend Western Oregon University this coming fall to play football.

Klippel might have been the highlight for Scappoose in the boys' meet, but he certainly wasn't the only bright spot. Senior Nick Rust set a new PR in the 100 and 200 meter races, finishing in 11.70 and 23.30 respectively for first place in both events. Justice Oman, who was right on Rust's shoulder in the 200 meter race, won the 400 meter event and helped the team's 4x100 meter relay team take first with a time of 44.21 with the assistance of Rust, Braden Clark and Matt Shoun.

Clark, Kyle Nickel, Keith Nickel and Mychal Hortert won the 4x400 meter relay over Seaside's bid with a time of 3:37.94.

Junior Dan Carrier sat out of the 1,500 meter race a little more than a week removed from his fantastic finish to beat St. Helens' Bryan Strang in the season's first meet. Carrier made up for it by narrowly finishing second in the 800 with a new PR of 2:03.93, and winning the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:50.76.

Though the Indians didn't get a top-three placer in the boys' hurdles, they did see improvement from junior David Krupsky, who bumped up his marks in the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles, taking third in both events. Senior Sam Herscovitz took fourth and sixth respectively.

Tillamook's Coley Trost and Seaside's Josh Chesnut combined to win first place in all the jumps events, though Trost tied Rust in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, six inches in the high jump. Matt Shoun and Braden Clark took fourth and fifth in the long jump, and Michael Gift finished third in the triple jump.

The girls were graced by the return of several important pieces, including seniors Charlie Davidson and Abby Kessi and sophomore Eleanor Jones. All three pitched in, placing in their 2014 debut.

Davidson, Kessi and Jones along with senior Haley Wight each anchored a leg of the winning 4x400 meter relay team, which finished in 4:24.20. Davidson won the 3,000 meter race by more than a minute, finishing in 10:49.54 ahead of Tillamook's Kestrel Bailey in 12:02.41. Jones took the 100 meter hurdles in 17.20, and finished eight tenths of a second out of first in the 300 meter hurdles. She also took third in the long jump competition, finishing with a mark of 14 feet, 10 inches.

Kessi made herself heard as well, taking a close third in the 1,500 meters and finishing second in the triple jump with a leap of 28 feet, one inch.

Scappoose also got victories from senior Lindsey Marquart in the 800 meters and a first-place finish in the high jump from sophomore Jessie Powell. Junior Olivia McDaniel won the pole vault competition with a vault of 6 feet, 6 inches, topping Bridgette Malone and Tennaya Carr of Seaside who each cleared six feet even. McDaniel also took third place in the 200 meters by a tenth of a second behind Tillamook's Chloe Pampush.

Scappoose will next be in action at the Lower Columbia Invitational at St. Helens High School on Saturday, April 12 at 12:30 p.m.
