St. Helens will return home for a rematch today at 4:30 p.m., depending on the weather

The slide continues for St. Helens baseball, who have lost their last four games in league play after splitting with Sandy to kick off the NWOC season. The Lions (5-10, 3-5 NWOC) fell to No. 7 Sherwood (10-6, 7-1 NWOC) by a score of 6-2 on Thursday afternoon. With one game left in the season series with the Bowmen, St. Helens will have to dig deep if they want to come out of the week with a bright spot in hand.

Sherwood started senior Lucas Johnson, and whatever he was doing on the mound, it certainly worked.

The Lions didn’t come up with anything until the fifth inning when Bryce Winnier doubled to left field and broke up a no-hitter, hoping to start a rally with St. Helens down 6-0. Beau Mason singled to right field, and a grounder from Noah Weitzel finally got the Lions on the board, scoring Winnier to give the Lions a breath of fresh air.

St. Helens knocked in another in the top of the sixth, scoring Josh Keller, but Bryce Mulcahy and Tyler Stangland were put out at first and second on the play, squeezing the Lion rally and slowing chances of a wild comeback. Sherwood reliever Brandon Geiger stepped in, shutting down St. Helens and striking out all three batters in the seventh inning, winning the sixth consecutive game for the Bowmen.

The final game of the series is scheduled for Friday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in St. Helens, barring a rainout.
