5A Track and Field: Day one results

Kylie Reinholdt takes fourth in the long jump, Hughes qualifies for both hurdle event finals

by: JOHN WILLIAM HOWARD - St. Helens senior Thomas Hughes qualified for both the 110 and 300 meter hurdle finals at the OSAA 5A Track and Field championships in Eugene.Lion senior Kylie Reinhold saved her absolute best for the last showing of her senior season.

Reinholdt jumped 16-9.5 to take second at the NWOC championships a week prior, but lept 17-1.25 in the long jump finals to take fourth place at the Class 5A Track and Field championships in Eugene.

by: JOHN WILLIAM HOWARD - Senior Kylie Reinholdt jumped a career-best 17-1.25 to place fourth in the long jump at the OSAA 5A Track and Field championships on Friday. Reinholdt will try for her first state title in the triple jump on Saturday. It’s still short of Cheryl Anderson’s 1985 mark of 18-2.25, but it’s a new personal best and the furthest jump in over a decade for the St. Helens girls.

Reinhold also competed in the high jump, reaching 4-10 before bowing out and settling for a 10th-place tie.

Thanks to Reinholdt’s efforts as the lone Lady Lion to reach the state championships, St. Helens sits in 10th place after four scored events. She still has the triple jump left, an event in which Reinholdt is expected to challenge for a state championship. She’ll jump next to last as the second-seed in the competition.

The St. Helens boys saw a pair of good showings from their two representatives as well. Senior Jacob Zartman threw 45-5 on his final scored attempt, and though it was short of his career-best, it still managed to garner him a 7th place in the shot put.

Fellow senior Thomas Hughes made the finals in both the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles, finishing high enough for the fifth overall seed in the 110 meter finals despite running a relatively slow 15.51 (PR is 15.19).

The 300 meter event went even better for Hughes, who was fresh off setting a new NWOC meet record. Hughes claimed the third seed for tomorrow’s finals, running a 40.24.
