Local club soccer makes name in Cowlitz
FC Columbia County's name is beginning to spread well outside of the county line – and the state, for that matter.
One team in particular will have a new piece of hardware for the trophy case.
The clubs' U14 Girls team blew through Lewis County Volcano 4-0 to kick things off, drew 1-1 with Velocity-Fountain in the early afternoon and topped the Warriors 2-1 to finish with 22 points to win pool play and advance to the division championship on August 3.
Columbia County eked out another victory, this time breaking the stalemate with Velocity-Fountain for a 1-nil victory to claim the division title.
The U13 girls team had success as well, beating Velocity-Treichel 2-0 before falling to Timber Barons J. Anderson in the championship round.
Loss, Klippel help All-Stars to win
Former Scappoose standouts Taylor Loss and Kenny Klippel each had a hand notching another win for the West in the annual East-West Shrine Game, Oregon's small-school all-star football match up.
Lightning postponed the annual east-west All-Star game in Baker City, and though things eventually got rolling, the west waited until the second half to bring out the big guns. Ridgeview's Boomer Fleming rumbled in for both touchdowns for the west in the second half, pushing the green and white squad to a 15-6 victory.
Banks' Garrett Markham also starred in the victory.
Scappoose baseball hosts fundraiser
For the third year in a row, the Scappoose baseball program will host the Ryan Moores memorial golf tournament, this time at Quail Valley golf course on August 30.
The tournament, which will be a 4-man scramble, will include a barbecue and silent auction once the tournament is finished.
Proceeds go toward the Ryan Moores Memorial Scholarship fund which is awarded to a baseball player selected by the Moores family each spring. The hope is for a clubhouse to eventually be built in Moores' name.
