Scappoose, fresh off of a third-place run at the Pacific Rim Armed Forces Tournament Jan. 6-7 in Seaside, seeks its next challenge in place of Friday, Saturday and Sunday's Oregon Wrestling Classic at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond canceled because of heavy snowfall.

"I'm excited for our younger wrestlers to get the experience of a big varsity tournament, and I am excited to have the tough competition," said Jack Eggers, a Tribe junior who beat Class 5A St. Helens senior Nick Richardson 13-6 in the Pac-Rim's 160-pound third-place match.

Only Class 6A Tigard (213.5 points) and fourth-place state finisher Ilwaco (Wash., 192.5) outperformed the Indians (186.5), back from a tie for 14th at Class 4A state, as Tyler Cooper outlasted Stayton senior Ryan Ninman 3-2 for the 120-pound championship.

"The championship match was fun for me: I finally got to test myself a bit, and I know I have a lot of room to improve still," said Cooper, a senior unbeaten in seven bouts since he went second in the state at 113 last year. "I have one more month to prepare for state [set for Feb. 24-25 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland], and I'm going to use that month to grow as much as I can."

Cooper reached the top in Seaside by pinning Warrenton freshman Armin Rodriguez in 1:28 in the quarterfinals and finishing Nestucca junior Gabe Garcia — a 113-pound Class 2A/1A consolation semifinalist last year — in 1:41.

Colton Frates, an up-and-coming freshman, challenged Tigard sophomore Killian Ryan in the 106-pound championship but fell 11-6 for second.

He made his run with a 1:30 quarterfinal pin of Columbia (White Salmon, Wash.) freshman Jack Kelly and a 17-2 semifinal technical fall over Yamhill-Carlton junior Jacob Jarvis.

Zeddy Jamerson (170), a junior, also went second as Class 5A St. Helens senior Colton Beisley, back from fifth at 145, beat him 11-4 for the title.

Jamerson climbed up from the first round with a 2:37 pin of Columbia freshman Bowen Durkee, a 14-3 quarterfinal major decision over Yamhill-Carlton junior Zachary Culver and a 12-5 semifinal defeat of Tigard senior Marshall Smith.

Trevor Jackson (132), a freshman, and Jack Eggers (160), a junior, both cane up third.

Jackson, in a sign of the Tribe's Pac-Rim influence, met none other than sophomore teammate Braydon Merrow-Hansen in the third-place bout and took him down in 44 seconds.

It was pin-or-be-pinned for Jackson as he overpowered Vernonia sophomore Kathrin Will in 18 first-round seconds and put Nestucca freshman Elias Sifford away in 32 quarterfinal seconds.

Stayton junior Bailey Archuleta clipped his streak, however, in 3:55.

AJ DeGrande (106), a sophomore, and Steven Hensley (138), Skyler Bhagat (195) and Garrett Wood (285), all juniors, were fourth.

Zach Knight (182), a senior, and Alex Hansen (285), a junior, went sixth.

The Indians hit Seaside eager to improve on a 50-18 home loss to Banks in their Cowapa League opener at home the day before.

DeGrande won by fall over freshman Ian Oravec, as did Frates against freshman Andy Evers and Cooper versus sophomore Samuel Martinez, but the Braves won the evening 50-18.

Trevor Thiessen (160), a senior back from fourth at 145, sealed a 13-5 major decision over Jack Eggers in a rematch of Thiessen's Ranger Classic championship pin on Dec. 3, 2016, in Estacada.

Bhagat gave senior Clay Pena (back from sixth at 195) trouble at 220 but fell in a pin.

"We are a young team, so any growth is a huge success," Cooper said. "I'm looking forward to some tough competition for myself as well."
