Seniors launch a home run each on Thursday at Frank Wade Park

    - The No. 11 Cubs outslugged the visiting 17th-ranked Indians in Thursday's Class 4A play-in game at Frank Wade Field in Newport.

Seniors Sam Imbler-Bremner, Clark Boys and Cody Riley each launched a home run over the fence as their side brought in three first-inning runs and won 8-4.

The Cubs (17-7 overall), winners of three in a row and 10 of 12 since they beat Cascade 5-4 on April 18, and who average seven runs per game against four, will reach Wednesday's first round, against an opponent to be named, for the second time in three years after falling to eventual Class 4A champion Scappoose at home in 2015 and missing the postseason entirely last season.

The Tribe (13-11) made their second play-in round exit in a row.

Imbler-Bremner landed four runs and scored, Boys went for three RBIs and a run, and senior Colton Blaser and junior Trenton Luckini both scored twice.

Sophomore Jacob Dobmeier pitched five innings for four earned runs -- two of which were Indians home runs -- seven hits, walked two and struck out five. Boys closed with two scoreless innings for a hit and a walk.

Scappoose is scheduled to graduate outfielders Nate Rieman, Zach Knight, Jack Margheim and Hunter Holmason, Derek Badger (catcher), Jacob Mizee, Ben Teeter and Quinn Searle (infielders) after finishing 7-8 for fourth place in the Cowapa League with averages of eight runs against seven per game.
