Cooper Mootz and Wilsonville played downhill against the Lions on Friday, Sept. 22, for their best offensive outing of the young season.

The junior running back rushed to first-quarter touchdown runs of 29 and 23 yards and second-quarter scores from one yard and 15 yards away to help his Wildcats to a 57-7 win at Doc Ackerson Stadium in St. Helens.

Wilsonville improved on its 52-14 win at Hillsboro a week earlier and its 52-0 home win over Class 6A Franklin on Sept. 8.

"I thought we played our butts off," Lions senior quarterback Chase Parkhurst said. "There were some things we should've done here and there, but hats off to Wilsonville: They had a great group of guys and were really respectful."

The Wildcats (3-1 overall, 2-0 Northwest Oregon Conference) led the Lions (0-4, 0-2) 54-7 at halftime, and senior kicker Austin Kness split the uprights with a 17-yard field goal and 2:47 left in the evening.

In a first-quarter break for St. Helens down 20-0, Zane Weis recovered Wilsonville junior Cade Edmonson's fumbled punt return at the Wilsonville 20 with 1:30 left.

Ethan Friend reeled in a 27-yard touchdown from Parkhurst in the left of the end zone as Wildcats junior defensive back Trevor Antonson leapt to intercept the pass the tiniest bit too early with 10 minutes to halftime.

Wilsonville jumped on Caleb Carter's ensuing onside kick at the Lions' 40, however, and Antonson repaid Friend's touchdown with a 30-yard burst and a 27-7 lead 46 seconds later.

Mootz hightailed for 89 yards on seven carries, Overholt completed four of five passes 105 yards, and Gomez and junior wide receiver Isaiah Haqq led Wilsonville receivers with 31 respective yards.

The Lions are set for a 7 p.m. game with Hillsboro (0-4, 0-2) on Friday at Hare Field.
