Sophomores, junior, freshman set all-time best 1:39.16 at River City Invitational

SPOTLIGHT PHOTO: JAKE MCNEAL - Indians freshman Will Blair won the boys' 50- and 100-yard freestyles and helped his 200 free and 200 medley relay teams to first.

Bryant Sharp, Nash Wilson, Quincy Reynolds and Will Blair are a Scappoose High boys' 200-yard freestyle relay team without equal.

The sophomores, junior and freshman's 1-minute, 39.16-second sprint broke the five-year-old school record at the River City Invitational Friday, Dec. 8, at Eisenschmidt Pool in St. Helens.

The all-time accomplishment helped the boys to first with 398 points over North Marion (252) in the seven-team pool, and follows the 400 free relay school-record 3:43.68 that Sharp set with Austin Sharp, Will Harley and Brannigan Vogt in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state preliminaries Feb. 17.

"Our boys' 200 free relay took down not only the meet record of 1:41.15 [which was our goal coming in], but also the school record of 1:40.31 from 2012 [set by Ryan Rafferty, Kody Backus, Jeremy Powell, and Todd Graham]," Indians coach David Richmond said. "We have been chasing that [school] record for three straight years, so to knock that one off in only the second meet of the season gives the guys a lot of confidence. It's early and we are seeing big personal bests already up and down the line up. I like seeing the top of our lineup swimming fast so early, and the depth of the whole team is developing well."

Blair aced the 50 free (23.59) and the 100 free (52.57), Wilson (2:10.13) led the 200 free, Reynolds won the 100 backstroke (1:12.67), Harley was the best in the 100 backstroke (1:13.45) and Vogt finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:06.63).

"I really liked how excited everyone on the team is," said Blair, a freshman. "Everyone swam really good this week, and I was really happy with all the boys on the relay team. Everyone else has been swimming really well on the team, too. I also loved that [the Invite] was at home and that we won our first home meet. I really enjoy coach David; he's been a really good coach and has been helping me in swimming a lot."

The Tribe swept the boys' relays as Wilson, Harley, Vogt and Blair (1:55.25) prevailed in the 200 medley.

"Our pumped-up positive attitudes towards the meet before going into it and of course our great coaching from Coach David [helped]," said Sharp, a sophomore.

Sharp, Reynolds, Harley and Vogt (3:50.91) triumphed in the 400 free.

"We won every single guys' event -- including the relays, which are worth more -- outside of the 200 IM and 500 free, even then placing second and third in those events," said Vogt, a senior. "Not only that, but due to us having 13 different point-scoring guys this meet, we were able to out-speed as well as out-depth the other teams."

The girls raced to a close second (256) behind Tillamook (306) in an eight-team field as Ciara Dreeszen won the 200 free (2:25.28), and the 200 free relay of Kelsey Ela, Dreezsen, MacKenzie Ela and Gabie Krueger (2:03.08) came first.

"For the last few years the girls team has been lacking depth and versatility," said Dreeszen, a senior. "Over this season, though, we've had some really strong girls come out, like Rachel Lauridsen and Kelsey Ela, and our returning girls Gabie Kreuger and MacKenzie Ela have been training really hard. One of our team goals was to have more confidence and to truly demonstrate what it is to be a team. I think that this second place finish says that we are well on our way to achieving our goal, and that we're a team that needs to be taken seriously."

Scappoose is scheduled next for the Newport Invitational at 2 p.m. Friday at the Newport Aquatic Center.

"It was a really strong showing [at the Invite]," Richmond said. "I think we'll see similar results like this throughout the season when we really try to come out and win a meet. We really wanted to win on both the girls' and boys' sides: Our girls scored 30 more points in the meet than what was on the form chart so they put themselves in a position to challenge Tillamook, but Tillamook put up 20 more than they were slated for as well."

The Indians will also dive into their last contest of the calendar year at Valley Catholic, set for Dec. 19 at Beaverton High School.
