The Lions freshman and senior, Tristin Buchanan (fifth, 120), Willie Webb (sixth, 145) and Shawn Lee (eighth, 152) helped St. Helens to 15th with 58 points as Class 6A Tigard (215) ran away from Class 5A Central (127) for the championship Saturday, Dec. 9.

"The best part about the Springfield Tournament was the mat time because this is my second tournament since freshman year," Carter said. "The team is young, so it was good to see everyone getting to wrestle multiple times and learning as the day went on."

In girls' competition, Kara Smith (160) won the title as she pinned Willamette senior Megan Jenkinson in 2:58.

Quinnlyn Coddington (180) reached the final bout before Gold Beach senior Jade Piper scored a one-minute pin.

Megan Oyler (285) contended to the same finish as she fell to South Umpqua junior Samantha Stroud in a minute.

Siletz Valley junior Patrick Shawyer pinned Scott in 20 third-place match seconds, and Tigard third-year Javier Velasquez brought down Carter in 1:59.

"I was surprised I got my first varsity win and came in fourth place in my weight on varsity as a first-year wrestler and a freshman," Scott said.

Buchanan beat Lowell junior Justin Corp in :43 in the fifth-place match, Webb fell to Churchill sophomore Tyler Carey in 4:47 for sixth, and Dayton sophomore Kody Fuller finished Lee 7-5 in the consolation semifinals.

The Lions' fortunes improved in Springfield after they gave up eight pins and a forfeit in a 57-18 loss at Hood River Valley Thursday, Dec. 7.

"Having different guys doing well each week has been fun to watch," St. Helens coach Greg Gadbois said. "We are young in a lot of weights [and we still have a long way to go] but the kids are improving so fast, they seem to get better with each match. We also had [Springfield] placers on the girls' side: Kara Smith took first [at 160], extending her unbeaten streak to 8-0, and Quinlynn Coddington [180] and Megan Oyler [220] both finished the tournament in second place."

Buchanan beat Eagles sophomore Jesse Flores in 12-10 sudden victory, Lee finished sophomore Maverick Geller 9-6, and Cade Duarte (195) and Carter accepted forfeits.

St. Helens is scheduled next for its 7 p.m. home premiere against Hillsboro Wednesday, then to compete in the girls' Liberty Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Hillsboro.

"I really like it at home and the vibes and support of my friends and fans," Scott said.

The boys will also wrestle at Class 3A Clatskanie at 10 a.m. Dec. 30.
