Isaac Cook 152-pound runner-up for Scappoose wrestling at Muilenburg Tournament
Isaac Cook rode three pins and an 8-1 decision to the Muilenburg Tournament's 152-pound championship bout Dec. 8-9 in La Grande.
The Indians senior fell to Burns fourth-year Evan Gunderson, however, in 53 seconds.
"[It was a] tough tournament [with] lots of good competition," Cook said. "[I'm] glad I was able to perform well."
AJ DeGrande (third, 106), Zeddy Jamerson (fourth, 182), Cutter Sandstrom (fourth, 285), Colton Frates (fifth, 113), Trevor Jackson (sixth, 152) and Jack Eggers (sixth, 170) helped Scappoose to seventh in the 20-team field with 162.5 points as hometown La Grande (269) led Bethel High (Spanaway, Wash.), just shy with 263.
"I am extremely proud of Isaac Cook for the way he battled his way into the finals," Tribe coach Nick Byrd said. "He has shown a tremendous amount of grit and leadership over the past few weeks. The Muilenburg is a difficult tournament and our guys really stepped up. We have improved over the first portion of the season, and it showed this past weekend. Our group is dedicated to improving on a daily basis and their hard work is starting to pay off. Zeddy and Jack both had difficult brackets and battled hard throughout, while some of our younger guys are starting to make a name for themselves."
DeGrande pinned Banks sophomore Cole Johnson in 2:17 for third.
Jamerson forfeited to Bethel's Jacob Olsen for fourth, and Sandstrom fell 5-1 to Barlow senior Triston Stauffer in the third-place match.
Frates pinned Bethel's Cauy Wood in 2:16 for fifth.
Jackson (152) forfeited to Quinton Schock of Weiser (Idaho) in the fifth-place match, and Eggers (170) withdrew from his fifth-place bout against Barlow sophomore David Luna with an injury.
Scappoose is scheduled to head for the Molalla Tournament, set to include Corbett, Estacada, Gladstone, Tillamook and Woodburn, Saturday.
