Indians' 1,048 points win Molalla Meet in advance of Molalla Invitational Saturday

     -

The Indians boys and girls swept the Molalla Meet Jan. 5 at the Molalla Aquatic Center, and they'll come right back for the Molalla Invitational scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Saturday.

Scappoose's 1,048 points (555 for the boys in their third win in a row, and 493 for the girls) led North Marion (682) in the five-school pool.

"I thought it was a good preview for when both teams win again at leagues," said Brannigan Vogt, a senior who helped his 200-yard medley relay (1 minute, 57.13 seconds), 200 freestyle relay (1:40.65) and 400 free relay (3:48.49) to first. "It's always fun seeing so many teammates on top of the rankings and leading races. I'm very proud of all the people who've been improving so much in the recent season."

Will Blair remained unbeaten in the boys' 50- and 100-yard freestyles in 23.94 and 54.74 respective seconds.

"It was a very exciting meet," said Blair, a freshman. "The girls are doing amazing right now, first almost beating [Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Region 1 champion] Tillamook -- just barely losing by two [points] -- now winning this meet. The boys are staying really consistent, winning almost all our meets, and our relay has just been amazing I'm really proud of everyone on the team."

Will Harley (2:27.80) and Quincy Reynolds (2:32.28) led the 200 individual medley.

"Quincy Reynolds PR'd in the 100 back [1:09.71, second to North Marion sophomore Lucas Toth (1:08.32)] and broke the 1:10 barrier for first time," Tribe coach David Richmond said. "He had a 12-second PR in the 200 IM, which was huge, and then to cap off the day burst to a 55.68 split in the 400 relay [which also included Nash Wilson and Harley]. It's no secret we want to make the final at state this year in that relay [after setting a new 3:43.68 school record in the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A preliminaries in 2017], and the guys are giving us great efforts early: I won't be surprised if we have some huge time drops by the end of the year. Will Harley looked great in his events today, winning the 200 IM with a PR and setting another best in the 100 breaststroke [1:13.41 for second to Stayton junior Eric Seitz's 1:08.49]."

Gabie Krueger led the girls' 100 free in a personal-best 1:03.89.

"Gabie Krueger had a great day, taking off about a second in her backstroke lead-off for the [200] medley [in a third-place 2:18.02 run with Ciara Dreeszen, MacKenzie Ela and Kelsey Ela] and taking first in a PR in the 100 free," Richmond said. "MacKenzie Ela is showing a propensity for speeding past other teams in the clutch part of the 200 freestyle relay, anchoring the girls to third [2:11.53 with Montana Poppenhagen, Hadley Enos and Rachel Lauridsen] and passing another team in the last 10 yards for the second time in a week."

Dreeszen also aced the 200 free (2:27.53).

"Winning on both sides was exciting for us," said Dreezen, a senior. "I think we're all starting to come into our own and get in the groove of our events. I think the guys had a strong team from the get go, but I'm starting to see the girls develop more depth, which is great."

The Indians can't wait for their new go-round.

"Our goal going in will be the same as today: To win it," Richmond said. "They are giving out trophies for the top two team finishes on the boy's and girl's side -- I want to see us swim well and take home two trophies, ideally two first-places. Our first-year swimmers are looking really strong and coming along well. I told the team back in November -- and again this last week -- January is a month where things start to really click for first-year swimmers, and we're already seeing that two meets into 2018."
