A Good Samaritan and Sherwood resident intervened and stopped a theft at the Sherwood Dutch Bros. on Tuesday. The Good Samaritan, who wishes to remain anonymous, detained a man accused of stealing from a tip jar until police arrived.

Sherwood Police arrested Adrian Estrella, 19, of Sherwood, charging him with third-degree theft and possession of a controlled substance (heroin). Ty Hanlon, a spokesman for the Sherwood Police Department, said Estrella was standing at the walk-up window at Dutch Bros. when he allegedly took cash from the tip jar and walked away from the business. The man then confronted Estrella and detained him until police arrived, telling Estrella that it was wrong to steal and that the money belonged to the business.

When police arrived, Hanlon said they found the stolen money in Estrella’s pocket along with drug paraphernalia and heroin. Estrella was lodged in the Washington County Jail on the theft and drug possession charges.

Hanlon said the Sherwood Police Department applauds the actions of the Good Samaritan in this case and intends to surreptitiously recognize his efforts and thank him. While citizens are generally discouraged from intervening with a crime in progress, police recognize the important role all residents play in keeping Sherwood safe, said Hanlon.
