School district gets $490,000 to bolster SHS tech programs

Grant will help variety of high school programs

The Sherwood School District has been awarded a $490,000 Oregon Career and Technical Education Revitalization Grant from the Oregon Department of Education.

Funds from this grant will add new equipment to Sherwood High School’s regionally recognized Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program and allow teacher John Niebergall to share this program with districts across the state.

The grant will help fund the spread of collaborative manufacturing to more than 30 Oregon schools. These collaborative manufacturing tools include industry standard computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing software, CNC (short for computer numerical control, which allows a computer to control a machine tool) vinyl cutters, laser engravers/cutters, and 3-D printers.

“We are excited to continue to build a state of the art STEM program in Sherwood and for Mr. Niebergall to continue to share his outstanding work with other districts in the state,” said Sherwood High School Principal Ken Bell.

According to the district, the Career and Technical Education Revitalization Grant also expands STEM training to Sherwood Middle School and Laurel Ridge Middle School students.

Meanwhile, both Laurel Ridge and Sherwood middle schools will receive professional development, curriculum assistance, software, and equipment for guiding students into the high school’s current career and technical education program, the Bowmen Fabrication Laboratory.

Sherwood School District teacher Ryann Reedy will head Sherwood’s middle school programs.

Sherwood High School’s training facility and mobile FabLab will facilitate strong partnerships between education and employers to build a revitalized CTE ecosystem in Oregon. Students will engage in collaborative design and fabrication projects, using industry-standard equipment and processes, including distance collaboration, to gain academic, STEM, and technical skills allowing them to participate in a globally-interconnected economy.
