Plans are to break ground in June 2018.The Sherwood School Board has passed a resolution that gives the go-ahead for the district superintendent to negotiate with the city of Sherwood to buy 15 acres of land, a portion of the property needed to build a new high school.

The board approved the measure 3-0 during a June 27 teleconference as it seeks to purchase property off of Elwert and Kruger roads.

Earlier in June, the Sherwood City Council agreed to sell the school district the land at $130,000 an acre. The district is seeking an estimated 71 acres of land for the new school with plans to break ground in June 2018.

It is still negotiating with adjacent property owners to purchase their parcels in order to have the school up and running by the fall of 2020.

The city owns 19.9 acres of property at the site — land it purchased in 2011 for $65,000 an acre. It will use five of those acres for right-of-way as part of a $5.9 million Washington County roadway improvement project that will include a roundabout. The city property has been appraised at $100,000 an acre. A house on the property owned by the city, which is in poor condition, is expected to be razed as well, according to city officials.
