Joergensen reaches quarterfinals at state

Sherwood girls players also get wins at the 5A tourney


by: DAN BROOD - AT STATE -- Sherwood's Anders Joergensen hits a shot during his first round singles match at the Class 5A state tennis tournament.Members of the Sherwood High School boys and girls tennis teams found some success at the Class 5A state tournaments, held last Thursday through Saturday at the Portland Tennis Center and the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.

For the Sherwood boys, senior Anders Joergensen reached the quarterfinal round in singles competition. Joergensen, a foreign exchange student from Denmark, opened the tourney by scoring a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mischa Kirby of Ashland.

In the quarterfinals, Joergensen fell 6-1, 6-1 to No. 2 seed Chandler Oliveira of Summit.

For the Sherwood girls, sophomore Allison Schwarm also got to experience victory in singles play. Schwarm, after losing 6-2, 6-2 to Sierra Winch of Bend in a first round match, posted an 8-2 win over Jessica Clark of Pendleton in a pro-set consolation bracket quarterfinal match. Schwarm then was edged 8-6 by River Davis of Ashland in a consolation semifinal match.

The Lady Bowmen doubles team of seniors Amy Marks and Cambria Rooney lost 6-0, 6-1 to eventual state champions Hanna Greenberg and Vika O'Brien of Ashland in a tourney first-round match. Marks and Rooney bounced back to get an 8-1 win over Mariah Crowley and Sophie Cohen of Wilson in a consolation semifinal contest. In the consolation semifinals, the Sherwood seniors lost 8-1 to Lindsay Pautsch and Sara Stavros of West Albany.

The Sherwood doubles team of juniors Sabrina Adams and Megan Kittle opened play with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Franklin's Mytien Nguyen and Annie Chen in a qualifying round match. In the first round, Adams and Kittle fell 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to the No. 4-seeded team of Emily Hollander and Madison Penn of Marist.

In the consolation quarterfinals, Adams and Kittle lost 9-7 to Pautsch and Stavros.

Crescent Valley and Summit tied for the Class 5A boys team championship. Ashland won the Class 5A girls team title.
