Work wraps up next month on a new photovoltaic solar electric system at Portland’s Southwest Community Center  — setting in motion a new project known as Solar Forward.

Solar Forward is the city of Portland’s new revolving loan fund to pay for solar projects, a joint effort of the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, Portland Parks & Recreation and Solar Oregon.

In April, the city was awarded $100,000 from the Oregon Community Foundation’s Penstemon Fund. The contribution provided for the installation of the solar system at Southwest Community Center in Portland’s Multnomah neighborhood.

Solar Forward encourages community members to contribute money, building a revolving loan fund so other solar projects can be completed.

All contributors are promised name recognition at the host site — the Southwest Community Center.

The planning bureau estimates that Solar Forward will be able to finance the installation of a second system within six years.
