Retailer to collect single-serve coffee capsules for recycling
Single-serving coffee capsules are proving popular with coffee drinkers. But with an estimated 5 billion sold each year in the U.S., thats a lot of new waste going into landfills.
Terracyle, the New Jersey company that specializes in taking on challenging items to recycle, is trying to do something about this growing problem.
Terracycle has agreed to collect and reuse the coffee grinds and packaging from two of the single-serve companies: Nespresso and illy iperEspresso.
Leftover coffee grounds will be sent to an industrial composting facility and the packaging will be converted into a variety of new products.
Local residents can bring their used coffee capsules to Sur La Table stores at The Brewery Blocks in downtown Portland, Lake View Village in Lake Oswego and Bridgeport Village in Tigard.
