The city of Portland has a novel idea to get people to take out the trash.
If Portlanders merely sign up for email reminders of when their garbage pickup day is, theyll be entered in a raffle of sorts to get $100 off on their future garbage bills.
Every since the city went to trash pickup every other week two years ago, many residents still cant remember whether its a garbage week or not when they roll out their garbage, yard debris/compost and recyclables carts.
If residents sign up at www.garbagedayreminders.com, the city will send them reminders, and will provide information about what goes into each container, how-to videos on composting and more.
Mayor Charlie Hales figures that will boost Portlanders 70 perecent recycling rate. These email reminders are one more way to make green choices even easier, Hales says.
To date, 6,000 people have signed up for the email reminders. Now one out of every 1,000 who sign up for the email service can get a $100 credit toward their future bills. The goal is to get another 11,000 households signed up.
