Leaky pipe dumps bacteria into Columbia Slough
A 30-inch pipe that carries sewage from East Portland to the citys Columbia Boulevard Wastewater Treatment Pond sprang a leak, spilling sewage into the Columbia Slough near the footbridge just east of N. Portland Road.
Members of the public are advised to avoid contact with the slough in that area for the next two days, because of bacteria that escaped into the water. (See map at mapsengine.google.com/map/viewer?mid=zXRSaxwEarJ8.kJPs1PVCENHs.)
The Bureau of Environmental Services determined that the pipe was leaking intermittently, whenever the Inverness pump station was activated. So the bureau took the 30-inch pipe out of service and is planning a repair project.
