What’s the best “Green” vehicle on the road today? Automotive journalists from around the Northwest recently met to test a number of the latest entries into the market and determine the answer to that question.

Members of the Northwest Automotive Press Association named the 2015 Volkswagen Golf TDI as the Northwest Green Vehicle of the Year. The new Golf features a revised version of VW’s highly regarded turbodiesel engine with exceptional mileage and refined driving dynamics.

Portland is Volkswagen’s leading market in terms of the percentage of diesels sold. The 2015 Golf also won the Alternative Fuel Vehicle category.

In the Electric Vehicle segment, the Fiat 500e took the honors. Until recently, the 500e was only available in California, but it’s now available in Oregon. “The 500e is attractive and fun,” said event co-chairman Bengt Halvorson of High Gear Media. It has the ability to “convert people who hadn’t even thought about electric cars into EV enthusiasts,” he added.

In the Hybrid category, the Lexus CT200h was the victor. The compact hatchback melds the efficiency of the company’s Hybrid Synergy Drive with sports car aspirations and packages it into sharply styled vehicle.

Journalists named the Mercedes E250 Bluetec diesel as the Green Luxury Vehicle of the Year. The E-Class sedan offers a wide variety of luxury features in a vehicle capable of 38 mpg on the highway.
