Nonprofit offers three series of classes this summer at school garden in East Portland

COURTESY GROW PORTLAND  - Lettuce is easy to grow, but if you need some pointers, a local nonprofit is offering affordable classes on how to grow organic food this summer. Want to learn how to grow organic food?

Grow Portland is offering three courses this summer in East Portland to help people learn how to do it. Each course is taught in four, three-hour sessions, at the Menlo Park School Garden, 12900 N.E. Glisan St.

The four sessions, taught by experts, cover crop planning, soil and bed preparation; seeding, translating and irrigation; compost, amendments and pest management; fruits, herbs, seed saving and fall gardening.

Grow Portland is a local nonprofit dedicated to increasing opportunities for urban gardening. Charges for the courses are listed as "pay as you will."

All the courses take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The first course will be offered on Wednesday evenings, on June 7, 14, 21 and 28.

The second course is on Monday and Tuesday evenings, July 10, 11, 17 and 18.

The third course is on Tuesday evenings on August 8, 15, 22 and 19.
