Green lodging a selling point for Portland-area hotels
Portland's reputation as a "green" city drives travelers' expectations about where they will stay when they visit here.
Hotels have taken notice.
The following is a short list of some of Portland's more sustainable lodging properties, at a variety of price points:
Aloft Portland Airport at Cascade Station: Besides its close proximity to the airport and location next to light rail, this Green Seal (Silver)-certified hotel makes ample use of sustainable cork and wood materials in its guest rooms, and offers electric-car recharging stations.
The Duniway, a Hilton Hotel: This newly opened property's dining room is a sustainability star. Materials are sourced from the surrounding region, including Oregon black walnut and white oak, leathers from Tanner Goods, and locally sourced steel (and a standout chandelier made of recycled bike frames). The space also celebrates sustainability in the arts with a number of acclaimed local artists contributing original commissioned works.
Heathman Hotel: The first hotel in downtown Portland to partner with Pacific Power's renewable energy program, more than 30 percent of its electric consumption originates from carbon-neutral wind energy. More than 90 percent of the hotel's food waste is turned into organic matter and used in city park flowerbeds. More than 80 percent of the hotel's total waste volume is recycled. Its Headwaters restaurant showcases Oregon-sourced ingredients from sea to farmland.
Portland Hostel Hawthorne District: The 1909 renovated building features a green roof and on-site composting. A rainwater demonstration project diverts rainwater to the toilets. They claim to recycle 85 percent of the waste they generate.
Provenance Hotels: The company's deLuxe, Lucia, Sentinel hotels have beehives on their roofs; rooftop bees visit flowering plants nearby, providing a hyper-local taste in the honey produced. Hotel Lucia and deLuxe offer signature cocktails made with the honey, and all the hotels offer a jar of honey for sale in each guest room honor bar. The hotels have bicycles you can borrow for exploring the city. Hotel deLuxe and Dossier have EV charging stations.
The Nines Hotel: Careful attention was paid to choosing non-toxic, low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints, sealants, carpets and upholstery. The hotel says it diverts 80 percent of its waste from landfills, and offers smart energy thermostats. It has rooftop beehives and a garden with a water collection system, as well as an on-site mushroom farm (and soon a sustainable tilapia and trout-raising facility on-site). Energy-efficient elevators and appliances are used to reduce the property's carbon footprint.

Here are some features you might ask about:
• Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification: The Green Building Council program rates buildings on a point system for construction or remodeling elements that reduce energy use, cut down on water use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve indoor environmental quality.
• Green Seal Certification: ensures that properties minimize waste, maximize water and energy efficiency, have purchasing programs that focus on environmentally responsible materials and resources.
• More common, basic efforts: LED light bulbs; energy-efficient appliances and televisions; recycled and recyclable pens and pads; bed linen and towel reuse options; low-flow shower heads; dual-flush toilets; faucet aerators; and recycling bins
• Refillable body, hair-care cleaning dispensers, instead of stocking bathrooms with throwaway personal care items
• Energy-efficient air conditioning and heating
• Thermal solar panels to heat water in rooms and swimming pools
• Street-side EV charging stations for guests
• Sensor-operated thermostats in individual rooms, which monitor the need for heat or air conditioning, reducing energy use in unoccupied rooms
• Key-card switches that activate lighting and heating/cooling components by simple insertion at the door
• Free bike use or bike-share kiosk access for guests
• Food and beverage offerings that feature locally grown, sustainably sourced ingredients
