EcoFilm Festival returns to Portland
The Portland EcoFilm Festival returns to the Hollywood Theatre with a slate of four film showings over Earth Day weekend.
The films are:
• Koyaanisqatsi, Friday, April 20, 7 p.m.: An exploration of humans' relationship to nature, this experimental film directed by Godfrey Reggio features cinematography by Ron Fricke and an original music score by American composer Philip Glass.
• The Reluctant Radical, Saturday, April 21, 7:30 p.m.: An intimate portrait of climate activist Ken Ward, whose civil disobedience culminated with the action that shut down the U.S. tar sands oil pipelines on October 11, 2016. Pre-film music set by the Road Sodas. Post-film party included with admission. Filmmakers and film subject in attendance.
• Reel Talk: Beyond the Big Fish; Sunday, April 22, 2:30 p.m.: Screenings of the new short film Chandalar, which profiles Soul River's work bringing veterans and youth together in outdoor immersion programs on public lands; and Mic Crenshaw's new environmentally-focused music video Earthbound, directed by Elijiah Hasan. Special guests include: Chad Brown, founder of Soul River Inc.; Oregon Wild; hiphop artist Crenshaw; and social justice advocate Sharon Gary-Smith.The films will be followed by a panel discussion about diversity in environmental advocacy.
• Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf, Sunday, April 22, 6:30 p.m.:
A documentary that reveals how the revolutionary landscape designer Piet Oudolf upends our conventional notions of nature, public space, and ultimately, beauty itself.
Hollywood Theater is a nonprofit arts organization located at 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd. in Portland. Festival films cost $10 each, $8 for students and seniors.
