Biketown riders rack up 520,000 trips on rented orange rides
People who rented Portland's Biketown Biketown bicycles usually rode during weekday evening commutes for about two miles.
That's what the city's Bureau of Transportation found when Biketown released data Friday, April 20, on 520,000 trips taken on the bike sharing program since it began in July 2016. During the past two years, 111,000 riders have taken 519,494 trips for about 1.1 million miles, according to the agency.
The Biketown sharing program has 3,469 annual members. An average trip for all users took about 25 minutes and traveled around 2.04 miles, according to the agency's data. Most riders rented bicycles on weekdays between 4 and 6 p.m. The busiest month was July 2017, when 54,470 trips were taken on the bikes.
City officials partnered with Nike and Motivate to create Biketown's orange bicycles that can be rented around the region.
