OTSD students proven to achieve greater growth than their Clackamas County peers

The study released toward the end of 2017 assessed and compared the academic growth of schools across the country and also found that the Oregon Trail students are achieving better academic growth than the others in Clackamas County. Through the course of five years, Oregon Trail students are said to experience 5.8 years of growth. In comparison, Lake Oswego schools achieve 4.6 years in five years and Riverdale schools achieve 5.5 years of growth in five years.

"It amazed me how well we're doing," District Communications Director Julia Monteith told The Post.

Tim Werner, the district's teaching and learning director, said it was refreshing to see a study focus on "growth, not just straight achievement."

He added that much of the district's academic growth can be attributed to its intervention programs.

"We do a really good job early on at identifying kids who might be below grade level and implement intervention," Werner said. "Eventually, you end up with awesome graduation rates. That would be the goal."

He also credits the ability of district staff, in both administrative and teaching, to "get on the same page," for this success.

"When you have a supportive community and teachers (who) are all on board and good principals in place," he added, "that's when you have an environment conducive to growth."
