Oregon Trail offers full day kindergarten

At the end of April, the Oregon Trail School District sent letters to families of incoming kindergarten seeking commitment to a full day program it hopes to provide next year.

The program will be offered at Naas Elementary School in Boring and Firwood Elementary in Sandy at a cost of $300 per month for nine months. Students enrolled would attend school from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Those interested should call Naas Elementary, 503-668-4454, or Firwood Elementary, 503-668-8005, by Wednesday, May 14.

A contract and deposit of $20 are required to hold a child’s spot. Contract information is available at under the parent tab. If enrollment numbers do not allow for the program, deposits will be returned.

Kelso holds Zumba kids fundraiser

Kelso Elementary School, 34651 S.E. Kelso Road in Boring, will hold a new type of fundraiser: a Zumba night.

As a school that prides itself on being healthy, Kelso Elementary is trying to get away from just selling cookie dough, Principal Katie Schweitzer said.

The Zumba event will be held after school at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 15.

Schweitzer said a parent teaches Zumba for kids and has taught in classrooms at the school. She said this is an activity they know the kids enjoy and thought it would make a good fundraiser.

Parents and friends are welcome to attend.

Sandy Grade holds movie night event

Sandy Grade School is hosting a movie night at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the school’s gymnasium, 38955 Pleasant St.

The event includes a raffle fundraiser to benefit the school’s Community Club.

Raffle tickets to win local business items cost $1 or six for $5.

Students get the chance to vote on the movie, and Principal Deb Odell said it is likely to be Disney’s Frozen. Drinks and food will be provided.

Oregon Trail Academy seeks board members

Oregon Trail Academy is accepting applications for two governing board seats.

The term for the positions would begin in July.
