SANDY— Coming into their game against Madison, Sandy had not won a non-conference game since 2013.
That all changed on Friday night.
The Pioneers dominated on both sides of the ball against Madison and pulled away in the fourth quarter with a 35-16 victory against the Senators.
Orion Shaw led the Sandy rushing attack with two touchdowns on the night and Colton Gorski followed up his great performance in week one with two more receiving touchdowns in this one.
After not having a football program three years prior, Madison finished 2016 with an 8-2 record and a victory over Grants Pass in the first round of the 6A playoffs. The expectations are high for the Senators this season as they have multiple Division I commits on their roster, but for all 48 minutes, Sandy looked like the better team.
"It's hard to prepare for (Madison) because they have great athletes all over the field. I'm proud of our guys and the disciplined they showed," Sandy head coach Joe Polamalu said. "We focus on us and how we play. Athletically, we're going to get beat here and there, but we have to get up and play the other team and play every down and I think our kids do that."
Sandy opens up their conference season next Friday at home against Parkrose. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
