SANDY — Despite suffering their first league loss of the season against Wilsonville on Oct. 4, the Sandy volleyball squad proved that they are still the team to beat in the Northwest Oregon Conference.

The Pioneers defeated the La Salle Falcons in four games on Wednesday night, winning the match 25-12, 25-22, 22-25, 25-18 and putting themselves in prime position to take home the conference crown.

Sandy outside hitter Olivia Caldwell led Sandy with 13 kills on the night and setter Brooke Dodge chipped it with 16 digs and 29 assists.

While the Pioneers were discouraged with the loss a couple weeks ago, head coach Shyanna Davis had an encouraging message for her team in defeat.

"I told the girls that this could be the best thing that happened to us this season," Davis said about the loss to Wilsonville. "We no longer had that pressure of being undefeated and we could just come out and play the way that we know how."

Sandy definitely looked like a looser, more relaxed team in the first set against La Salle. Thanks to an ace from Caldwell, as well as a pair of aces from middle blocker Samantha Brewster, the Pioneers got out to a 13-7 lead.

"Our serve-receive was really low-quality, so we couldn't get our offense going. It's as simple as that," La Salle head coach Chijo Takeda said. "That was our biggest issue. (Sandy) didn't miss a whole lot of serves, so kudos to them."
