Anti-gun violence vigil set at TuHS
More than 200 students and families are expected to gather at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at Tualatin High School to remember those killed and wounded in last week's school shooting in Parkland, Fla.
The vigil is being organized by Becky Chamseddine, a parent in the school district, to "inspire students and families to take action."
Using the hashtag #Mommabearisdone, Chamseddine posted a notice on Sunday on Facebook. Since then, students, teachers, and parents have been inviting friends through social media. Current estimates are that more than 200 are expected to attend the vigil.
Several speakers are planned, including student representatives from both Tigard School and Tualatin high school, teachers and a local pastor.
Moms Demand Action, an organization being created by Chamseddine, will encourage students and adults to "get active, register to vote, and use their voices to urge lawmakers to create common sense solutions to gun violence."
The school is at 22300 S.W. Boones Ferry Road, Tualatin.
Ernie Brown, Tigard-Tualatin School District, superintendent, addressed the vigil in an email to the community Monday afternoon.
"Obviously, last week's tragic shooting has had a profound affect on all of us," Brown wrote. "As a school district, we are examining all of our current safety precautions and beginning to identify more actions that can be taken to improve school security. We will be sharing our work as we begin putting these additional steps in place."
He also urged people to take action if they fear that a violent incident could happen.
"If you have a concern about a possible threat, report it to school authorities, the police or to the SafeOregon tip line," he wrote. Use this incident as an opportunity to talk to your students. If you find you need support — including access to mental health resources — please let us know. We can connect you to our school district's counselors and Care Coordinators."
