Susan Rieke-Smith has worked at the elementary, middle and high school levels in Salem-Keizer and Springfield.

The Tigard-Tualatin School Board has selected Susan Rieke-Smith as the district's next superintendent. She is the current superintendent of Springfield Public Schools in Springfield, Ore., and will replace Ernie Brown, who is retiring June 30. Susan Rieke-Smith

The school board is scheduled to vote on her contract at its regular meeting on Monday, May 7. Staff and community members will have the opportunity to meet her between 4 and 5:30 p.m. that night at an informal reception in the library of C.F. Tigard Elementary School, 12855 S.W. Grant Ave., Tigard.

Rieke-Smith has a doctorate in education and has worked for 18 years as an educator at all three school levels. She began her career in 2000 in the Salem-Keizer School District where she taught fifth grade, English language learners and worked in Title 1 schools (a federal designation for schools that serve low-income communities). Between 2004 and 2007, she served as curriculum assistant principal at McKay High School in Salem and in 2007, she became principal of Houck Middle School in Salem. At Houck, she was recognized as Oregon's 2011 Middle School Principal of the Year.

From 2011 to 2014, she served as Salem-Keizer's director of instructional services.

She joined Springfield Public Schools as assistant superintendent in July 2014. In April 2015, she was named interim superintendent and was permanently appointed to lead the district in November 2015.

Education is a second career for Rieke-Smith. After nearly a decade as a nurse, she went back to school to earn her Masters of Arts Teaching in 2000 from George Fox University.

"I am an educator because I believe in the life changing power of an education," she said. "I believe all students have the capacity to learn and deserve to develop their talents and achieve their dreams through rigorous and engaging instruction."

She and her husband, Jeff, have three married daughters and one granddaughter. Rieke-Smith has served as an adjunct faculty member for the University of Oregon College of Education and is a member of the Springfield Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. She is also a board member of the Wildish Theater.

"We are excited about the energy and expertise Dr. Rieke-Smith will bring to Tigard-Tualatin, " said Board Chair Jill Zurschmeide. "She is a great fit for our district and we look forward to continuing success under her leadership."
