The bill passed the Senate and is on its way to the House.

Two Westside lawmakers chalked up a big win for the longterm health of Oregonians when a bill passed the Senate last week, raising the legal age for use and sales of tobacco products from 18 to 21.

The bill is the work product of Sen. Elizabeth Steiner Hayward of Beaverton and Rep. Richard Vial of Scholls. Her district includes Beaverton and Northwest Portland; his district includes Sherwood, King City and Tigard's River Terrace area. She's a veteran lawmaker and a Democrat (also a physician); he's a rookie and a Republican (also an attorney). Sound like an odd combo to get anything done in politics today?
