Tidings of 'Martians' at the Joy
Christmas brings carols, presents, feasts and twinkling lights — and, at the Joy Cinema and Pub Friday evening, Martians.
The Joy, an independent movie theater in Tigard, will host a special screening of "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians," a cult classic science fiction flick from 1964.
Presented by Ygal Kaufman, who organizes classic film screenings all over Oregon, the event also will include a holiday sing-along before the movie. Joy Cinema owner Jeff Martin will perform carols with his rock band, the Jim-Jams.
"It's intended for anybody who loves holiday get-togethers, and loves having fun and singing and enjoys classic films," said Kaufman about the screening. "It's really perfect for the whole family — there isn't going to be anything here that isn't kid-friendly."
Kaufman said he picked "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" — in which Martians kidnap Santa, so that children on Mars will get presents — to screen because it's the rare cult classic that combines science fiction camp with holiday cheer.
"When we're looking for a holiday film, there aren't that many examples of holiday sci-fi that are fun and kitschy and also has surprisingly good production values," he said. "There's times in the movie when you really get into it, because this is actually a really good science fiction film. And then, you know, it's a really silly, fun to laugh at, throwing popcorn at the screen type of thing."
Kaufman incorporates news reels, cartoons, movie trailers and commercials from the film's era into all of his screenings, to "give a more historical filmgoing experience." He knows that his event isn't a typical holiday movie screening — cherished classics like "White Christmas" and "It's a Wonderful Life" are what spring to mind — but he's happy to offer an alternative experience.
"That's something we really try to do in all of my screenings — we're picking out movies that are classic, but also maybe not as obvious," he said. "It's a great opportunity for people in Tigard to go to the Joy Cinema and see what a great place it is."
