Suyematsu shines for Pacific baseball team

The Tualatin grad earns honor for performance in 17-inning win


Nathan Suyematsu, a 2012 Tualatin High School graduate and a sophomore on the Pacific University baseball team, came up big for the Boxers in their 17-inning 9-8 win over Lewis & Clark in a game played Saturday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium in Forest Grove.by: PACIFIC UNIVERSITY - Nathan Suyematsu

Suyematsu, one of The Times' Athletes of the Year in 2012, started the game at second base and played their for the first 10 innings of the contest. He then took over pitching duties in 11th innings. In 6 1/3 innings of work on the mound, Suyematsu gave up no runs on no hits while striking out four and walking two. The pitching victory was his first at the collegiate level. He also had a base hit and scored a run in the victory.

The performance earned Suyematsu a spot on the D3Baseball.com team of the week.

“Nathan came into the game at a crucial time and pitched extremely well in a situation where every inning was critical,” Pacific coach Greg Bradley said in a release on the school's Web site. “The performance he turned in, considering that he played the field for the first 10 innings, was outstanding.”

Suyematsu followed up that performance by belting three hits and driving in two runs in a 9-1 victory at Corban on Tuesday.
