Lady Bowmen run to playoff victory

The Tualatin girls team also scores a postseason win

by: DAN BROOD - ON THE MOVE -- Sherwood freshman Kendra Ellertson (left) looks to drive against a South Salem player late in Monday's state playoff game. The Lady Bowmen got a 15-5 win. SHERWOOD — Prior to the start of the 2014 high school girls lacrosse season, Sherwood wasn’t absolutely sure it would have enough players to field a team.

Well, the Lady Bowmen not only came up with enough players, but, now, they’ve also got a state playoff victory to brag about.

Sherwood continued its strong 2014 campaign by running to a 15-5 win over South Salem in an Oregon Girls Lacrosse Association first-round state playoff game played Monday at Sherwood High School.

“Considering that no one thought we’d have even have a team, this is a big deal,” Lady Bowmen senior Avery Rosenbalm said after the win.

“This is huge,” Sherwood senior Lacey Bjorndal said. “Especially as a senior.”

“It feels good to win this at home,” Lady Bowmen senior goalie Samantha Stewart added.

With the win, Sherwood, the No. 2 team out of the Northwest Oregon Conference, improved to 12-3 on the season. South Salem, the No. 2 team out of the Willamette Valley Conference, finished its season with a final record of 7-4.

Bjorndal led a balanced Sherwood scoring attack in the victory with six goals.

“We took smart shots,” she said. “We struggled with that in the beginning of the sesaon.”

“We were very patient,” Stewart added.

Rosenbalm added four goals, sophomore Hannah Reid added three goals and sophomore Morgan Bowers had two goals to go with a game-high three assists.

That was more than enough offensive support for the Lady Bowmen defense, which gave up just five goals.

“We’ve come a long way as a team on defense,” said Stewart, who had nine saves in the victory.

“We all came out and played with a lot of heart,” Rosenbalm said. “We’re a motivated team.”

Sherwood was slated to play at Oregon Episcopal School in a state playoff second-round game on Wednesday. Results of that game weren’t available when The Times went to press.

The winner of Wednesday’s game at OES will meet either Beaverton or Wilsonville in a state playoff quarterfinal tilt on Friday.

The Tualatin girls lacrosse team also opened postseason play with a victory, as the Timberwolves posted a 13-11 win over Grant in a first-round game played Monday at Grant High School.

Senior Kelly Skoglund led Tualatin in the win with four goals and two assists. Taylor Maestas and Rachel Dixon added three goals apiece for the Wolves. Jordan Mitchell had two goals and two assists.

Tualatin was slated to play at West Linn on Wednesday. The winner of that game will meet either Southridge or Oregon City in a quarterfinal game on Friday.
