The Sherwood girls are sending five players to state

by: DAN BROOD - HAPPY VICTOR -- Sherwood senior Anders Joergensen is all smiles following his first-round victory at the NWOC district tournament. PORTLAND — When Anders Joergensen returns to Denmark, he certainly won’t be going back empty handed.

The Sherwood High School senior, and foreign exchange student, will have a district tennis championship in his possession.

Joergensen claimed the title by winning five consecutive straight-set matches at the Northwest Oregon Conference district tennis tournament, held last Thursday through Saturday at the Portland Tennis Center.

With the conference crown, Joergensen qualifies for the chance to compete for a bigger championship — a state championship.

The top four boys and girls singles players and doubles teams from the district tournament advance to play at the Class 5A state event, which will be held today (Thursday) through Saturday at the Portland Tennis Center and Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton.

The Sherwood girls tennis team is sending one singles player and two doubles teams onto the state event.

Joergensen began his trek to the NWOC singles title on Friday by scoring a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wilsonville’s Ty Samatowic in a first-round match. In the second round, Joergensen rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Alex Molisani of Wilsonville.

In the quarterfinals, Joergensen posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Arnold Nguyen of Parkrose, wrapping up a state-tourney bid.

But he didn’t stop there. Joergensen bested Mohsen Assadi of Liberty 6-0, 6-4 in the semifinals before getting a 6-3, 6-4 win over Milwaukie’s Jacob Cates in the championship match.

Joregensen will open state tournament play today with a first-round match against either Mischa Kirby of Ashland or Matthew Nguyen of Benson at Tualatin PAMPLIN MEDIA GROUP: DAVID BALL - FINAL FOUR -- Sherwood sophomore Allison Schwarm hits a shot during her semifinal victory at the NWOC district tournament.

On the girls side for Sherwood, sophomore Allison Schwarm earned her second straight trip to the state tournament by claiming the runner-up in singles play at the NWOC tourney.

Schwarm rolled to straight-set wins over Chloe Attaway of Milwaukie, Kennah Joy of Sandy, Lauren Chambers of St. Helens and Hailey Fischer of Sandy to get her spot in the finals.

In the championship match, Schwarm fell 6-3, 6-2 to Wilsonville powerhouse Haley Moss.

Schwarm will face Sierra Winch of Bend in a first-round match today at the Portland Tennis Center.

In doubles play, the Lady Bowmen team of seniors Amy Marks and Cambria Rooney placed second and the team of juniors Sabrina Adams and Megan Kittle placed fourth, sending both Sherwood teams onto state.

Marks and Rooney will open state tourney play by facing the top-seeded team of Hannah Greenberg and Vika O’Brien of Ashland in a first-round match.

Adams and Kittle will play Mytien Nguyen and Annie Chen of Franklin in a qualifying-round match today.

The Sherwood girls finished in second place in the team standings at the NWOC tourney with 34 points, putting them just three points behind tourney champion Wilsonville.

The Sherwood boys finished in third place in the team standings with 18 points. Wilsonville also claimed the boys team title.
